Why It Is Needed

Saving an Infected Tooth

When a crack or deep cavity lets bacteria reach the pulp — the soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth — it can become infected and painful. Removing the infected pulp is the only way to save the tooth from extraction.

Without treatment the infection keeps spreading, can affect neighboring teeth and may eventually cost you the tooth. A root canal removes the infection, then cleans and seals the inside of the tooth so it can keep working normally.

The Procedure

What Happens During a Root Canal

Most root canals take about 60 to 90 minutes.

Numbing & comfort

The area is numbed with local anesthetic; sedation is available if you are anxious.

Clean the canals

A small opening lets Dr. Gorman remove the infected pulp and disinfect the inside of the tooth.

Seal

The canals are filled and sealed to keep bacteria out, then a filling closes the opening.

Protect

A crown is usually placed afterward to restore strength. Healing takes about two to three weeks.

Are root canals painful?

Modern root canals feel much like a routine filling. We also offer nitrous oxide, oral and IV sedation, so anxious patients can relax or sleep through treatment.

How long does a root canal take?

Most take 60 to 90 minutes. Mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

What happens if I avoid a root canal?

The infection keeps spreading and can lead to an abscess and tooth loss. Early treatment is safer and usually less costly.
