Why Professional Whitening Works Better

Whitening uses a peroxide gel that breaks up the stain molecules inside the enamel. Professional products are stronger than drugstore strips and are applied so the gel stays on your teeth — not on your gums — which means a more even result with less irritation.

Before whitening, Dr. Gorman checks for cavities, worn enamel and gum recession, because whitening on top of an untreated problem can cause sensitivity. He will also tell you honestly what to expect: natural teeth whiten well, but crowns, veneers and fillings do not change color.

Some stains, such as those from certain medications or a tooth that has darkened after an injury, do not respond well to whitening. In those cases porcelain veneers or bonding may be the better way to get the shade you want.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Results typically last from several months to a couple of years, depending on what you eat and drink and whether you smoke. Touch-ups keep your shade bright.

Does professional whitening hurt?

It should not. Some people feel temporary sensitivity for a day or two; Dr. Gorman can recommend products and adjust the treatment to keep you comfortable.

Will whitening work on my crowns or veneers?

No — porcelain and composite restorations keep their original color. If you have visible restorations, ask about whitening first and then matching or replacing the restorations.

Is whitening safe for my enamel?

Yes, when supervised by a dentist. Professional whitening is applied in controlled amounts after an exam confirms your teeth and gums are healthy.

Do you offer whitening with a cleaning?
